It is an honor and a privilege to serve our community as a Governing Board Member of Santa Clara Unified School District. Please feel free to contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
I'm pleased to announce that the SCUSD Board of Education has hired a new superintendent. Her name is Barbara (Bobbie) Plough, and she has been the superintendent in Natomas and in Romoland. She has elementary, middle, and high school experience (teaching and principal), plus has been an assistant superintendent of HR and of Ed. Services (curriculum and instruction). Our board voted unanimously to hire Bobbie Plough after a very thorough search conducted by our search consultants, Leadership Associates. Ms. Plough will join us on July 1st, and will visit us for our June 9th board meeting.
Like all school districts throughout California, we are strongly affected by the state's budget problems. On March 4th the state told us that our funds will be cut by at least $9 million for next year. The cuts could be as much as $14 million. It is my honor to serve our district on the superintendent's budget advisory committee, which is composed of all stakeholders in our district (teachers/certificated staff, parents, classified staff, administrators, principals, adult ed, 2 board members, and the superintendent).
School districts all over the state are bracing themselves for additional cuts unless the Governor gets tax extensions put on a June ballot. So far, he is 2 votes short in the Senate and 2 votes short in the Assembly of reaching a 2/3 majority to put the tax extensions before voters. I have been lobbying for increased K-12 funding in Sacramento through the California School Boards Association.
I've attended many meetings to listen to state legislators discuss budget issues. Many of our Bay Area state legislators are former school board members, so they understand the schools funding crisis.
The following articles summarize the devastation that further cuts will have on K-12 education. Do legislators opposed to putting tax extensions on the ballot know how serious the budget problems are for K-12 education? Yes, they've been told by their local school boards: http://www.sacbee.com/2011/04/02/3522300/browns-countdown-day-83-gop-senator.html
